College and Career Resources
The ACT is a national college admissions examination that consists of subject area tests in: English, Mathematics, Reading and Science.

College Board helps students prepare for the transition to college through programs and services in college readiness and college success — including the SAT and the Advanced Placement Program.
The Common Application is a not-for-profit, member organization committed to the pursuit of access, equity, and integrity in the college admission process.
Federal Student Aid is responsible for managing the student financial assistance programs authorized under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965. These programs provide grants, loans, and work-study funds to students attending college or career school.

HCPSS participates in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs which provide families with significant benefits to help save money. Qualification is based on family size and income, and enrollment is confidential. All children in households receiving benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) can get free meals regardless of income, and students from households that meet federal income guidelines are eligible to receive free or reduced-price meals. Those eligible for reduced-price meals pay $0.30 for breakfast and $0.40 for lunch.
Learner’s Permit Applicants: Maryland State Law requires all applicants for a learner’s permit, under the age of 16, to demonstrate acceptable school attendance in the prior school semester. To verify school attendance, the legal parent/guardian must certify by signature on this form.
HCPSS is now using ScribOrder to fulfill all transcript and diploma requests as well as education verifications for previous graduates.
Requests, verifications, and secure payments are all managed by ScribOrder.

Apply for a Work Permit
Students must be offered employment before applying online. The Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation no longer requires minors to submit proof of age to the Commissioner of Labor and Industry, instead a parent or guardian must certify that the age listed on the permit is correct. Applications should be submitted electronically through DLLR’s website. Once the online application is complete, meeting all requirements, students can print their work permit to be signed.
Accident and Medical Insurance
Accident Insurance
The school system does not carry medical insurance for accidents that occur at school, including non-sport related injuries, such as trips and falls, physical education injuries, and recess/playground injuries. Thus, parents are encouraged to enroll students in the accident insurance program offered through HCPSS.

Medical Insurance
The Maryland Children’s Health Insurance Program (MCHIP) is available for families, pregnant women, and children in need of medical insurance. Applications are available through the school health assistant or by contacting the Howard County Health Department at 410-313-7500.
MVA Learner's Permits
The MVA Form for Learner’s Permit Applicants should be completed by students who are applying for a learner’s permit from the Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA). Please bring it to the Attendance Secretary, Stacy Rey, in the Front Office for certification.ahsabsence@hcpss.org
